Mozambique: Mozambique celebrated its first
World Breastfeeding Week with the assistance of LINKAGES Africa Regional
PMTCT and IYCF Program Training Coordinator Maureen Mzumara, who worked
with the Ministry of Health, UNICEF, and Helen Keller International to
promote the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding and continued
breastfeeding up to 2 years through a poster, “Breastmilk is best for your
baby.” LINKAGES paid for the printing of 200 posters, and UNICEF
funded additional printing of the posters and a leaflet-sized version for
all health facilities. LINKAGES also funded radio and television spots
that were broadcast nationally during the evening news from July 31
through August 5. Mzumara attended the official celebration, in which the
Deputy Minister of Health spoke about the benefits of exclusive
breastfeeding. School children, youth, and men presented skits and songs
about the dangers of artificial feeding and selected violations of the
Code of Marketing. The Ministry of Health said that the country hoped to
implement a national Code by November 2006. |

World Breastfeeding Week 2006
(August 1-7) marked the 25th anniversary of the International Code of
Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes. To date, more than 60 governments
have enacted all or many of the provisions of the Code as law. The Code
aims to protect and promote breastfeeding by prohibiting the advertising
and aggressive marketing of breastmilk substitutes, feeding bottles, and
teats. LINKAGES was involved
in World Breastfeeding Week in several countries. |
