South Africa:
LINKAGES printed tee-shirts, pamphlets, bags,
and banners for the week’s celebration. The Western Cape Provincial
Department of Health and Tygerberg Hospital held a workshop for 59 health
workers on the Code of Marketing on August 1. Country Program Coordinator
Phyllis Baxen made a presentation at the workshop on the Baby-Friendly
Hospital Initiative in the context of HIV. She was also the guest speaker
on events that led to the International Code of Marketing at an annual
event (Breast fest). Peer counselors at health care facilities that
provide support for breastfeeding invited breastfeeding mothers to this
event which was held in a large shopping mall. Radio disk jockeys served
as masters of ceremony, ensuring radio coverage. At noon all breastfeeding
mothers were invited to put their babies on the breast.
World Breastfeeding Week 2006
(August 1-7) marked the 25th anniversary of the International Code of
Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes. To date, more than 60 governments
have enacted all or many of the provisions of the Code as law. The Code
aims to protect and promote breastfeeding by prohibiting the advertising
and aggressive marketing of breastmilk substitutes, feeding bottles, and
teats. LINKAGES was involved
in World Breastfeeding Week in several countries.
